Massachusetts Democrats are in a state of shock. How could the nation reelect the Smirking Chimp, and by a wider margin than their President for the past four years, Al Gore? The only thing Kerry was able to do better than Gore was carry his home state, even if John Edwards lost his.

There is no such thing as a national election in the United States.

This may come as a surprise to many people, who believe that Americans will vote for president on November 2 in a "national" election.

An Affordable Boost to the Economy

Cutting the Income Tax to 5%

BOSTON – An economic analysis by the Beacon Hill Institute at Suffolk University finds that the Commonwealth could create thousands of new jobs and millions of dollars in new investment if, as Governor Mitt Romney proposes, the legislature would cut the income tax to 5%. Moreover, the state could increase spending in FY 2005 by 7.57% over FY 2004 even as it absorbed the loss in tax revenue that the tax cut would bring about.

$500,000,000 on the Table

by Representative Jeff Perry

Believe it or not, Massachusetts State Government has over $500 million of excess revenues. Due to a stronger than expected economy, increased fees, and the closure of several corporate tax loopholes, the Commonwealth finds itself in the enviable position of having to decide what to do with a half of a billion dollars. Furthermore, as we are approximately thirty days from the end of the Legislative session, these decisions are likely to be made in the near future.

Urban EMS Changes to Have "Ill" Effect on the Cape

by Cynthia Stead

I was in my car when it caught on fire a few years ago. Right before Exit 5 on the Mid-Cape, my engine suddenly burst into flames. I called 9-1-1 on my cellular phone, in a panic, and was immediately routed to…Framingham. When I said I was on Route 6, they asked me what town, and I told them West Barnstable. Eventually, they cleverly forwarded my call to the Hyannis Fire Department – hey, every town has only one fire department, right? In the meantime, a volunteer member of the West Barnstable Fire Department had been driving along Service Road, which runs parallel to the highway. Since he was a volunteer fire fighter, he ran over to the station, got the truck, and returned with a crew to put out the fire before the State Police bunker was done with the phone book. Chief John Jenkins was there with his men in minutes, because he was a local person, who understood the intricacies of local fire safety service. When I asked for my key ring with all my keys on it, he even reached in and broke off the melted ignition from the burnt-out car and handed it to me with a smile.

THE ORIGINS OF BUSH COUNTRY KETCHUP

Founded by Patrick Spero and Christopher Cylke, two young conservatives

While dunking our freedom fries in ketchup a few months ago, we came to a sudden realization. With each drop of ketchup we ingested, bottled by a company whose single largest individual shareholder is the wife of the Democratic Presidential Candidate John Kerry, we were indirectly making his wallet fatter. Bush Country Ketchup was created so “right-thinking” Americans could once again enjoy this condiment on our burgers and fries without the guilt associated with enriching an individual whose aspirations and goals are so clearly wrong for our country.

The state fiscal year is coming to an end June 30th. The new fiscal year’s budget, now on Governor Romney’s desk, is officially $22.5 billion unless you count the things that have recently been taken “off budget” like MBTA spending, Medicaid and some MassHealth funding and pension costs, in which case it is $24.8 billion.

by Cynthia Stead

Another proud vote was taken today in the House of Representatives, and since it is what is called a procedural vote, it is likely to be overlooked in the public eye in favor of the ultimate result. But this procedural vote is important because of what it says about the priorities of our Legislators, specifically those from Cape Cod.

Is there room for another conservative newspaper?
By Walter Brooks, Editor, www.CapeCodTODAY.com

When this newspaper, Cape Cod Common Sense, was launched last Fall we equated its potential to that of the Fox News nationally. To wit; if all the other cape newspapers are "left of center" then one "right of center" newspaper would have that market segment to itself and prosper as Fox has done nationally.

Falmouth Republican Tim Duncan Stands Up To Intimidation Attempts

Plymouth Democrat Therese Murray's seventh term reelection bid has fallen on rough times. Earlier this month Murray came under scrutiny for a violation of Massachusetts campaign finance law when it was learned that she accepted excessive contributions from special interests. Apparently since her promotion to Chairwoman of Senate Ways and Means, more special interest groups want her attention, if not friendship. She now has great influence over the state budget process and subsequent distribution of our tax money.

Needs Governor to solve foreign worker crisis

The summer season has officially started on Cape Cod and we'll soon know just how bad the foreign worker visa crisis is. Concerns that we'll have a labor shortage on Cape has proven two things about Congressional incumbent William Delahunt; first, he hasn't been taking care of business in the 10th Congressional District, and secondly, he doesn't have the political pull to effect policy on an emergency basis.

Criminal Records - Private or Public Information?

by Representative Jeffrey Perry

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has struggled for quite a long time with what information concerning someone's criminal record should be made public. As a former police officer and now elected Representative, I continue to shake my head in disbelief over how our courts and regulatory agencies treat the records of those who have been duly convicted of a felony.

More rough waters for the JFK of PT Boat fame -- scratch that -- the JFK of Swift Boat infamy. Two dozen fellow swift-boat Vietnam veterans held a press conference to question the veracity of John Kerry's war record, his career as an anti-war, anti-veteran protester following his three month swift-boat tour, and his fitness to become commander-in-chief.

In a Boston Globe article titled "Boston loses bid to host Virgin USA," business columnist Keith Reed describes the concerted but failed effort of Governor Romney, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and others to bring Virgin Airways' startup airline (Virgin USA) to Boston. Their hope was that Virgin USA would headquarter in the city, employ Boston Logan as it's initial North American hub, and create jobs here in Massachusetts.
